Important UK tax dates for the 2023/24 tax year

With so many dates scattered throughout the calendar, it can be easy to forget important tax deadlines for your business. At Alexander & Co, we have put together this useful guide for 2023 and the remainder of the 2022/23 tax year as well as the 2023/24 tax year, to help you keep track of the UK tax dates you need to remember.

Key tax dates for 2023 and the 2023/24 tax year

January 2023

  • ​​Online Self Assessment tax returns are due on the 31st January.
  • The first payment on account for the 2022/23 tax year is due on January 31st.

February & March 2023

  • End of year tax planning. Both individuals and companies need to consider planning for the start of the new tax year on April 6th.

April 2023

  • The 2023/24 tax year begins on April 6th. Annual tax rates or allowance changes will typically come into effect on this day.

May 2023

  • Employees must be issued with a P60 form by 31st May. 

July 2023

  • PAYE Settlement Agreements must be paid by 5th July. 
  • The deadline for submitting expenses and benefits forms P11D and P11D(B) to HMRC is on 6th July.
  • HMRC must receive payment of Class 1A National Insurance contributions by 19th July, or 22nd July if payment is made electronically.
  • The second payment on account for the 2022/23 tax year is due on 31st July.
  • Employment Related Security (ERS) Returns are required to be submitted to HMRC by 6th July.

October 2023

  • You must inform HMRC by 5th October if you did not submit a tax return for the previous tax year, but you need to submit one for the 2022/23 tax year.
  • Paper Self Assessment tax returns are due on the 31st October.

December 2023

  • The deadline to submit your Self Assessment tax return online is 31st December for anyone wanting HMRC to automatically collect tax owed from wages and pension.

January 2024

  • Online Self Assessment tax returns are due on the 31st January.
  • ​​The first payment on account for the 2023/24 tax year is due on January 31st.
